Brookline Underground Railroad Committee

The vision of the Brookline Underground Railroad Committee is to celebrate, advance, and honor the fight against slavery and racial oppression and all of those who have been a part of that fight. 

 Our mission is to tell of the resistance to slavery in Brookline and the wider community, often untold in our history.  The Underground Railroad is a term used to include both the planned and spontaneous acts of Africans and their allies in the struggle toward freedom and out of slavery.  We will recognize the role of the Brookline community as part of the Underground Railroad.  We hope this understanding of our history will inspire all of us to be a part of the ongoing struggle.

 Our goals are:

Plaques for the two houses, 9 Toxteth Street and 182 Walnut Street that are part of the Underground Railroad

§    Public awareness not only of these two houses but also of the resistance to slavery

§        Curriculum in the Brookline schools

§        Programs for public awareness

bullet

§        Working together with other Brookline groups on these issues including the Quilters of the Brookline Council on Aging who are making a quilt from historic designs used in the Underground Railroad. This quilt will be raffled off, proceeds to go to the Brookline Senior Center and the Brookline Underground Railroad Committee

§        Foster further research into additional Brookline Underground Railroad sites and other aspects of Brookline’s participation in the Underground Railroad
